The Reserve contains around 500 acres of flat, open land, and is home to various birds, mammals, plants and insects. To date about 250 bird species have been recorded on the reserve, of which 69 are considered to be common in winter.

The visitor's centre provides an observation tower, with views over the slobs and harbour, a 15 minute film about the history and the work carried out by NPWS staff on the Reserve, and also an interpretative display area, which is very popular with children. There are also three bird-watching hides looking out over the fields and main channel.

The bird-watching hides are wheelchair accessible, and there is a wheelchair toilet and baby changing area in the visitors centre.
